In 1877 the first steam tram was inaugurated and went from Sant Andreu del Palomar to the Arc de Triomf.
It was promoted by the businessman Aleix Soujol.
The new line covered a route of almost six kilometers between the area of the current Arc de Triomf and Carrer Gran de Sant Andreu on the corner with Abat Odó. The wagons could accommodate up to 30 seated people. This new communication meant, according to the historian Joan Pallarès, a great improvement for the residents of Sant Andreu, La Sagrera and El Clot. According to Pallarès, the tram would allow a direct connection with the city, it had an exit every half hour and "put Sant Andreu on the map". In addition, the passage of the tram led to the progress of sparsely populated and agricultural areas: new neighborhoods were created such as Masadas in the current Sagrera or new services were established such as the school Jesús, Maria and Josep in Sant Andreu.
On the other hand, the tram also caused accidents due to its speed, which was higher than that of horses. In addition, vehicles, trams and horse-drawn carriages had to share the traffic area.
The repair shops and garages were in the old Can Balcells factory, which was located in the building of the current Sant Andreu Civic Center. The Fire Tram ran for 25 years and was replaced in 1902 by electric-powered trams.
