The roof of the building Rodoreda transformed into a green space
Pompeu Fabra University has signed an agreement with the company
EixVerd , which together with other organizations and
Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), has created a green space experimental the roof of the
building Rodoreda campus of the Citadel.
As part of the agreement UPF shared with other entities
"Barcelona Climate Commitment" and the agreement signed by the Governing Council of the UPF on Ethics Sustainability Policy, the University decided to promote the expansion of green areas and vertical gardens. This initiative is included in the "
Green Corridor " which links the Ciutadella Park with the Collserola and Passeig de Sant Joan.
The green roof of the building Rodoreda, currently has three parallel experiments that aim to qualify substrates which are more suitable for the creation of green spaces in urban roofs. Substrates obtained, there will be a comparison to see which of the samples obtained is more energy efficient to use in urban gardens.
It is also conducting a pilot project to see under what conditions lavender works best. The initiative wants to promote the use of this plant on the roofs in Barcelona.
Finally, another experiment is being carried out is also a comparison of substrates, but in this case, agricultural cover. This requires different variables to consider with respect to the traditional garden, such as the thickness of land or water requirements of the sample. In fact, the test substrate used for future project covered agricultural
Tank Water.
The future of agricultural roofs Barcelona: The Water Tank
UPF wants to rethink the roof of the Citadel campus library as a green space within urban green corridor. The proposal arises from the UPF and partner organizations to make way for the installation of green spaces and buildings of Barcelona to make urban areas more green spaces and sustainable.
Project Repository Waters wants to be the answer to this need. Although it is still in the design phase, the intention of the project will include an organic garden of about 3.000m2 managed by people at risk of social exclusion, with a series of parallel activities such as beekeeping, taught workshops open environmental matters and management of orchards, possibility of a local neighborhood, visits or events, etc.
The management model that arises is economically self-sufficient from the initial investment. In addition, it includes a number of benefits, including improved air quality, capturing direct and indirect CO2 reduction of runoff and water quality when it returns to the city, soundproofing, urban biodiversity, social benefits, and agricultural production.
