Created in 1991 by the Plenary Council of Barcelona City Council, the Barcelona Municipal Markets Institute was born with a broad consensus, both among municipal political groups and among the world of traders. Its Board of Directors is made up of representatives of merchants, political forces and the city's municipal government.
Configured as an autonomous body for the direct management and administration of municipal markets, the IMMB is under the tutelage of Barcelona City Council in terms of approval of ordinances, appointment of positions, creation and deletion of markets and approval of major works.
The IMMB has two fundamental tools for the modernization of the markets: the new Municipal Ordinance and the new management models. A modernization that goes through the improvement of the Markets Service, the maintenance of the commercial quota, the management of diversity and the unification of trade regulation.
As things stand, the action of the IMMB focuses on 3 fields: improving infrastructures and services, updating the commercial offer and incorporating commercial promotion policies.
All this without forgetting a management that calls for a new market model for the 21st century, the adaptation of markets to their environment and the recovery of the civic role of market cohesion.
