The facility works to be the reference center from which to offer a close and direct service of information and environmental support on topics such as sustainable food, responsible production and consumption, circular economy, reduction of the environmental footprint, fight against climate change, respect for biodiversity and ecosystems, seasonal foods, Km 0 and local trade, zero waste: buy without packaging, etc.
It also wants to be a point of support for entities, traders and other actors in the territory to environmentalize their activities and help to comply with good practices to reduce consumption. Thus, from the Ciutat Vella Environmental Classroom, available municipal material resources are offered, such as reusable crockery, bins and signs for selective waste collection, and in a specific way we want to reach agents of economic promotion in the district, and especially to merchants in the district markets, to help them work on the selection of local suppliers, the circular economy, measures against food waste, elimination of plastic in packaging and waste in general, reduction of consumption, green distribution, etc.
These advisory services are added to the program of activities open to the public that usually take place from these facilities, such as workshops and talks, training in sustainability and sustainable food, or dissemination of the city's biodiversity and good practices environmental
Special attention is paid to the programming of activities aimed at children, in collaboration with educational centers, training centers and socio-educational entities in the district, and a specific Environmental Education program worked in coordination with the other facilities and services of the District (the two playhouses, four civic centers, two community centers, five centers for the elderly and a youth space) and with the other environmental facilities of the XEAB network in the district (the Manufacturing Academy of the Fábrica del Sol, the Center of the Beach, La Ludo of the Parc de la Ciutadella and the Environmental Education Documentation service -SDEA-).
Also from the Environmental Classroom will participate in the events and popular festivals of the neighborhoods, and in the management and revitalization of the district's community composters, located at pl. Folch and Torres and Barceloneta.
